Buying motherboards: common questions

How do I pick a motherboard for my processor?

Match the socket first (AM5 for Ryzen 7000/9000, AM4 for older Ryzen, LGA1700 for Intel 12th to 14th gen, LGA1851 for Core Ultra). Then check if it takes DDR4 or DDR5 memory.

What do B650, B760, Z790 and X870 mean?

That is the chipset. B boards are the sensible mid-range pick. Z (Intel) and X (AMD) add overclocking, more USB and more M.2 slots, which most people don't need.

ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX?

ATX is the full size with the most slots. Micro-ATX is smaller and usually cheaper, and fine for one graphics card. Mini-ITX is for tiny builds. Check your cabinet supports the size.

Do I need Wi-Fi on the motherboard?

Only if you can't run a cable to the router. Boards with "WiFi" in the name have it built in; otherwise a USB or PCIe Wi-Fi adapter works too.
