Buying internal SSDs: common questions

NVMe or SATA SSD?

NVMe M.2 drives plug straight into the motherboard and are several times faster than SATA. Get NVMe unless your PC has no M.2 slot.

Is PCIe 4.0 worth it over PCIe 3.0?

For games the difference in load times is small. A good PCIe 4.0 drive costs about the same as 3.0 now, so take 4.0 if your board supports it. PCIe 5.0 is not worth the extra money for gaming yet.

How big an SSD for gaming?

1 TB is the minimum for a gaming PC; one big game can be 150 GB. 2 TB gives you room for a proper library.

Does an SSD need a heatsink?

Fast PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 drives can get hot. Most motherboards have an M.2 heatsink, so a drive without one is fine in that slot.
