Buying processors: common questions

Which processor is best for gaming?

For most gaming PCs a 6-core chip like the Ryzen 5 7600 or Core i5-14400F is plenty. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D and 7800X3D are the fastest gaming CPUs because of their extra cache, but they cost a lot more. Spend the difference on the graphics card first.

AMD or Intel: which should I buy?

Both are fine. AMD AM5 boards will take new Ryzen chips for a few more years, so upgrading later is easier. Intel is often cheaper at the low end, and chips like the i5-12400F are still good budget picks.

What does the "F" or "K" at the end mean?

On Intel, F means no built-in graphics, so you need a graphics card. K means it can be overclocked. On AMD, G (like 8600G) means it has usable built-in graphics, and X3D means extra cache for gaming.

Will this CPU fit my motherboard?

Only if the socket matches: AM4, AM5, LGA1700 or LGA1851. Every processor page here lists the motherboards and memory that work with it.
