Builder's Guide

How to build a compatible custom PC

Selecting compatible PC parts is the most crucial step in custom PC assembly. A single mismatch—such as pairing an AMD AM5 processor with an LGA1700 motherboard, or choosing DDR5 memory for a DDR4 motherboard—can prevent your system from booting or cause costly return delays. Our PC Builder continuously verifies every electrical and physical dimension as you configure your build.

1. CPU & Motherboard Socket

Every processor requires a matching physical socket on the motherboard. AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs use Socket AM5, while Ryzen 3000/5000 use Socket AM4. Intel 12th–14th Gen processors use LGA1700, and Core Ultra 200 series use LGA1851. Our picker automatically restricts motherboard choices to compatible sockets.

2. Memory (RAM) Standard

DDR4 and DDR5 memory modules have different physical notch alignments and pin layouts. A DDR4 motherboard cannot accept DDR5 sticks. Always install RAM in dual-channel configuration (2x8GB or 2x16GB) to maximize memory bandwidth and gaming FPS.

3. PSU Wattage & Headroom

Your power supply must comfortably handle both sustained loads and transient microsecond power spikes from modern graphics cards. We calculate estimated combined system draw and recommend selecting a reliable 80 PLUS Bronze or Gold unit with at least 25% overhead.

Step-by-step part selection checklist

  1. Identify your primary use case: High-FPS competitive esports (1080p), immersive AAA gaming (1440p/4K), or creative productivity (video editing, 3D rendering).
  2. Select your GPU & CPU balance: Dedicate 40% to 50% of your total budget toward the graphics card for gaming. Ensure the CPU is powerful enough to avoid bottlenecking frame delivery.
  3. Choose responsive storage: Install an M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD for your operating system and game library to eliminate load times.
  4. Verify case clearance & cooling: Check maximum GPU length in millimeters and CPU cooler height against your PC case chassis specifications.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save and share my custom PC build?

Yes. Click "Copy share link" at the top of the builder table to generate an instant link to your exact configuration, or "Copy parts list" to paste your specs into Reddit, Discord, or forums.

Does this builder support budget builds for India and international stores?

Yes. PC-Build.online displays approximate pricing in Indian Rupees (INR ₹), US Dollars ($), Euros (€), and British Pounds (£). Clicking buy buttons opens the authorized retailer for your regional market.

What should I do if a part shows as incompatible?

Our status banner highlights the exact conflicting component (e.g., mismatched socket or insufficient power supply wattage). Simply click on the flagged component slot to select a compatible alternative.
