Why RAM Prices Went Up in 2026, and Should You Buy DDR4 or DDR5?

Why DDR5 and DDR4 RAM prices rose in 2026, whether to buy DDR4 or DDR5 for a new build, how much RAM you need for gaming, and today's prices for popular kits.

Why memory got expensive

Memory makers moved much of their production to memory for AI servers, which pays them far more. Less was left for PC memory and SSDs, and prices for both rose sharply from late 2025 into 2026. It hit DDR4 too, as production of the older type wound down.

Nobody can say when prices fall back. If you need a PC now, buy what you need now rather than waiting on a guess.

DDR4 or DDR5?

You do not really choose: the processor and motherboard decide. AMD AM5 and Intel Core Ultra 200S take DDR5 only. AMD AM4 takes DDR4 only. Intel 12th to 14th gen boards come in DDR4 or DDR5 versions.

  • Tight budget: AM4 with DDR4 is still the cheapest working gaming platform.
  • New build you will upgrade: AM5 with DDR5. DDR5-6000 is the sweet spot for Ryzen.

How much RAM for gaming in 2026

  • 16 GB: enough for gaming alone, including most new games.
  • 32 GB: for gaming with Discord, a browser and streaming open, or video editing. The safer choice for a new build if the budget allows.
  • 64 GB: 4K editing, 3D work, virtual machines or running AI models locally.

FAQ

Why did RAM prices increase in 2026?

Memory makers shifted production to high-margin memory for AI servers, leaving less for PC RAM and SSDs. Prices rose from late 2025 and stayed high through 2026.

Is DDR5 worth it over DDR4?

Only if your platform takes it. AM5 and Core Ultra 200S need DDR5. On a budget, an AM4 build with DDR4 still costs less overall.

Is 16 GB RAM enough for gaming in 2026?

For gaming alone, yes. With streaming, many browser tabs or editing, 32 GB is the safer pick.
