Air cooler vs AIO liquid cooler

Which do you need?

  • 65 W CPUs (Ryzen 5 7600, Core i5-14400F): a basic single-tower air cooler or the stock cooler is enough.
  • 105–125 W CPUs (Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Core i5-14600K): a good single or dual-tower air cooler, or a 240 mm AIO.
  • Hot high-end chips (Core i7/i9 K, Ryzen 9): dual-tower air or a 280/360 mm AIO.

Air coolers

Air coolers are cheap, quiet when sized well, and have almost nothing to fail except the fan. The trade-off is height: check that the cooler height is below the case's maximum CPU cooler height, and that tall heatsinks clear tall RAM.

AIO liquid coolers

An AIO moves heat to a radiator on the case, which leaves room around the socket and looks clean. They handle short heat spikes well. Check the case supports the radiator size at the top or front, and mount the radiator so the pump is not the highest point of the loop.

Lifespan

A quality air cooler can last the life of several builds. An AIO typically lasts 5–7 years before the pump or liquid wears out.
